The Freedom Tree Lighting Ceremony annually celebrates the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the American Constitution made in December 1865 that abolished slavery.

One of the artifacts in the display was the 8th-grade graduation dress that belonged to Shelton’ Ponder's great grandmother who attended Garrison School and graduated in 1901. The display focused on families, veterans, masons, women clubs, Garrison School and class pictures.

Members of the Clay County African American Legacy Inc. will host its 14th annual Juneteenth Celebration at the historic Garrison School located at 502 N. Water Street at 11:30 a.m. on June 20th. Tickets for the event are $10.00 at the door.

In commemoration of the passing of the Voting Rights Act, Northland residents are invited to attend, “Fifty Years Since Selma: A Voting Rights History and Story,” a Black History Month virtual presentation co-sponsored by Garrison School Cultural Center, Liberty Parks and Recreation, The Senior Learning Network, and The National Civil Rights Museum.

The Garrison Freedom Tree and Candle Lighting ceremony will allow Liberty and Clay County residents, community leaders, and law enforcement officers, the opportunity to join together in a spirit of trust, respect, and harmony in race relations as we celebrate the Christmas season.

The keynote guest panelist will be Lisa Young Alston, the daughter of Civil Rights leader and activist Rev. Andrew Young.  Rev. Young was Dr. Martin Luther King’s most trusted advisor and confidant.
