CCAAL, Inc. and Garrison School Cultural Center In the News

On Wednesday evening, Dr. Kathryn Toure, one of our newest Garrison members, and Dr. Cecelia Robinson, board member and Garrison School Cultural Center Historian, competed against individuals from 15 local organizations in the Greater Kansas City metroplex for a cash prize to be awarded to a community organization for designing a small scale digital learning project.  Specifically, the project was to propose a digital computer badge assignment that would appeal to youth and /or adults willing to complete the XP’s (experiences) to earn the badge. The sponsor of the project was LRNG, a Social Media Innovation organization located in the THINKBIG Partners building in downtown Kansas City.  (Continued below image)

After a brainstorming session with A.J. Byrd (Garrison School Cultural Center President) and Dr. Robinson, Dr. Toure wrote a proposal for a Future Leader Culture Badge that high school students in the northland can complete and place on their social media page, or on their resumes. There were three cash awards for the best proposal: $500, $750, $1,000 and three honorable mention cash awards for $250.00. The Kansas City Public Library won the grand prize of $1,000.

Garrison received one of the honorable mention cash awards for $250.00 that will be used for expenses associated with our project. Students in our ASEM program will be invited to participate in this project and any other Liberty high school students who may choose to sign up. All badges require specific experiences that the participants must complete. Kathryn wrote a skit (Read the Skit) for two people for our three minute pitch (presentations were restricted to three minutes) before the judges. Cecelia played the role of a high school student, and Kathryn played the role of the Garrison School representative.  Read more about the LRNG Competition
